How PPI is calculated

PPI means pixels per inch. The calculator first finds the diagonal pixel resolution using the horizontal and vertical pixel counts. It then divides that diagonal pixel count by the physical diagonal screen size in inches.

Screen width and height

Because the pixel resolution determines the screen's proportions, the physical width and height can be calculated from the diagonal size while preserving the same aspect ratio.

Pixel pitch

Pixel pitch is the physical distance from one pixel to the next. It is shown in millimeters. Higher PPI generally means a smaller pixel pitch.

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio compares screen width with screen height. The calculator simplifies the horizontal and vertical pixel counts into a ratio such as 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, or 21:9.

What Is PPI?

PPI means pixels per inch. It describes how densely pixels are packed into a display.

A higher PPI means more pixels are contained within each physical inch of the screen.

PPI = Diagonal Pixel Count ÷ Diagonal Size in Inches

The diagonal pixel count is calculated from the horizontal and vertical resolution using the Pythagorean theorem.

Diagonal Pixels = √(Horizontal Pixels² + Vertical Pixels²)

Example: 27-Inch 1440p Monitor

A 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 has approximately 108.79 pixels per inch.

How Wide Is a 27-Inch Monitor?

The width of a 27-inch display depends on its aspect ratio. A 27-inch 16:9 screen is approximately 23.53 inches wide and 13.24 inches high, excluding the bezel.

A display with the same diagonal but a different aspect ratio will have different physical width and height.

How Wide Is a 24-Inch Monitor?

A 24-inch 16:9 display is approximately 20.92 inches wide and 11.77 inches high, excluding the frame or bezel.

How Wide Is a 32-Inch Monitor?

A 32-inch 16:9 display is approximately 27.89 inches wide and 15.69 inches high, excluding the bezel.

Ultrawide displays with the same diagonal will generally be wider and shorter because of their different aspect ratios.

What Is Pixel Density?

Pixel density is another name for the concentration of pixels on a display. For screens, it is usually expressed as pixels per inch.

Two displays can have the same resolution but very different pixel densities if their physical sizes differ.

A 24-inch 1920 × 1080 monitor has a higher PPI than a 32-inch 1920 × 1080 monitor because the same number of pixels are packed into a smaller physical area.

Resolution vs Screen Size

Resolution and physical screen size describe different things.

Resolution describes the number of pixels on the screen, such as 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160. Screen size describes the physical diagonal measurement, such as 24 inches or 32 inches.

PPI connects those two measurements by describing how densely the pixels are packed into the available physical space.

What Is Pixel Pitch?

Pixel pitch is the physical distance between adjacent pixels. It is commonly expressed in millimeters.

Pixel Pitch in Millimeters = 25.4 ÷ PPI

Higher PPI corresponds to a smaller pixel pitch because more pixels are packed into each inch.

A display with 108.79 PPI has a pixel pitch of approximately 0.2335 mm.

What Is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between screen width and screen height.

A resolution of 1920 × 1080 simplifies to a 16:9 aspect ratio. A resolution of 1920 × 1200 simplifies to 16:10.

How Are Megapixels Calculated?

Megapixels describe the total number of pixels in millions.

Horizontal Resolution × Vertical Resolution ÷ 1,000,000 = Megapixels

For example, 2560 × 1440 contains 3,686,400 pixels, or approximately 3.69 megapixels.

Is Higher PPI Always Better?

Higher pixel density can make text, images, and interface elements appear sharper at the same viewing distance, but PPI is only one characteristic of a display.

Resolution, panel technology, color performance, refresh rate, response time, brightness, viewing distance, operating-system scaling, graphics performance, and intended use can also matter.

Viewing Distance and PPI

The usefulness of additional pixel density depends partly on viewing distance. Pixels are easier to distinguish when a screen is viewed from closer distances and harder to distinguish as viewing distance increases.

This calculator reports physical screen characteristics but does not attempt to determine an ideal viewing distance.

PPI vs DPI

PPI and DPI are sometimes used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they describe different concepts.

PPI usually refers to pixels per inch on a digital display or image. DPI traditionally refers to dots per inch produced by a printer or other physical output device.

For calculating monitor or screen pixel density, PPI is the appropriate measurement.

Screen Dimensions and Bezels

The physical width and height calculated here refer to the active display area, not the complete outside dimensions of a monitor, television, laptop, or device.

Real products also include bezels, frames, housings, stands, and other components. If you need to know whether a monitor will physically fit in a specific space, use the manufacturer's full product dimensions.

Screen Size Calculator Limitations

Results are mathematical estimates based on the entered resolution and diagonal measurement. Manufacturer specifications may use rounded diagonal sizes, and actual active display dimensions may differ slightly.

The calculator assumes square pixels and a rectangular display with the same proportions as the entered pixel resolution.
