How the gravel estimate is calculated

The calculator first determines the geometric volume of the area and converts it to cubic yards. Your selected extra-material allowance is then added to produce the recommended order volume.

Estimated weight is calculated by multiplying the order volume by the gravel density. Because gravel density varies, the weight result should be treated as an estimate rather than a supplier quote.

How much extra gravel should you order?

A small allowance can account for uneven excavation, settlement, spreading losses, and minor measuring differences. This calculator starts at 10%, but you can change the allowance for your project.

Cubic yards versus tons

Gravel may be sold by volume or by weight. Cubic yards describe how much space the material occupies, while tons describe its weight. Converting between the two requires an assumed material density.

If your supplier provides a specific tons-per-cubic-yard value for the material you are buying, enter that value above for a more useful weight estimate.

Gravel is commonly sold either by volume or by weight. Some suppliers quote prices by the cubic yard, while others sell gravel by the ton. Because the weight of gravel varies depending on the material, particle size, moisture, and compaction, converting cubic yards of gravel to tons requires an estimated density.

How Much Gravel Do I Need?

To estimate how much gravel you need, first measure the area that will be covered. For a rectangular area, multiply the length by the width and then multiply by the desired gravel depth. For a circular area, the calculator uses the diameter to determine the area before multiplying by the depth.

The resulting volume is converted to cubic yards, which is one of the most common units used when ordering bulk gravel. The calculator can also show the same amount in cubic feet and cubic meters.

Rectangular gravel areas

Rectangular calculations are useful for gravel driveways, parking areas, paths, garden beds, shed bases, and other spaces that can be approximated as rectangles.

The basic calculation is:

Length × Width × Depth = Volume

Make sure all measurements are converted to compatible units before multiplying them. This calculator handles those conversions automatically, so you can enter dimensions in feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters.

Circular gravel areas

Circular calculations can be useful for round landscape beds, fire-pit areas, circular seating areas, or similar projects. The calculator converts the entered diameter to a radius and uses the area of a circle before accounting for gravel depth.

Gravel Driveway Calculator

For a gravel driveway, measure the length and width of the area and estimate the finished depth of the gravel layer. Enter those values into the calculator to estimate the cubic yards of gravel required.

A driveway may contain more than one layer of aggregate, such as a larger base stone beneath a finer surface material. If different materials or depths are being used, calculate each layer separately rather than treating the entire driveway as one uniform layer.

Actual driveway material requirements can also be affected by grading, compaction, existing soil conditions, drainage, and how accurately the excavation matches the planned dimensions.

Cubic Yards of Gravel

A cubic yard is a unit of volume equal to a cube measuring three feet long, three feet wide, and three feet high. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

Bulk landscaping and construction materials are frequently ordered in cubic yards because it provides a convenient way to describe large volumes of material. When the calculator reports an order quantity of 3 cubic yards, for example, it is describing the volume of gravel rather than its weight.

How Many Tons of Gravel Do I Need?

Converting a gravel volume to tons requires knowing or estimating the density of the material. The calculator begins with a general estimate of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, but that number can be changed.

Different aggregate products can have substantially different densities. Crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, and other materials do not necessarily weigh the same amount per cubic yard. Moisture content and the amount of empty space between particles can also affect weight.

If your gravel supplier publishes a specific conversion or density for the product you are buying, use that value in the calculator instead of the default estimate.

Common Types of Gravel and Aggregate

The term gravel can describe many different materials. Depending on the project, you might be estimating crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, road base, drainage stone, decorative landscape rock, or another aggregate.

These materials can differ in particle size, shape, density, compaction, drainage characteristics, and intended use. This calculator estimates the quantity based on the dimensions you enter, but it does not determine which gravel product is appropriate for a particular structural or drainage application.

How Deep Should Gravel Be?

Gravel depth has a large effect on the total amount of material required. Doubling the depth of a gravel layer approximately doubles its volume when the length and width remain unchanged.

The appropriate depth depends on the project, material, underlying soil, expected loads, drainage, and construction method. When a project has a specified design depth, enter that depth directly into the calculator.

Why Add Extra Gravel?

Real projects rarely match their measurements perfectly. Excavated areas may be uneven, gravel can settle or compact, and some material may be lost during delivery and spreading.

The calculator includes a 10% extra-material allowance by default. You can change that percentage depending on how certain you are about the project dimensions and how much contingency you want when ordering.

The exact geometric volume and the suggested order quantity are shown separately so you can see how much material the project theoretically requires before the allowance is added.

Tips for a Better Gravel Estimate

Measure the project in several places when the area is irregular. A driveway or landscape bed that changes width can often be divided into several smaller rectangles and calculated separately.

If the ground slopes or the excavation depth varies, the calculated amount should be treated as an estimate. For large orders, confirming the quantity and material density with the gravel supplier can reduce the chance of ordering too much or too little material.

For projects involving multiple gravel layers, calculate each layer individually using its own depth and, when appropriate, its own material density.
