How the mulch estimate is calculated
The calculator determines the volume of the area at the mulch depth you enter. It then converts the result to cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters.
The selected extra-material percentage is added to the exact geometric volume to estimate how much mulch to purchase.
If you are buying bagged mulch, the calculator divides the order volume by the selected bag size and rounds up to the next whole bag.
How much mulch do I need?
The amount of mulch you need depends mainly on the area being covered and the desired mulch depth. A larger area or deeper layer requires proportionally more material.
For rectangular beds, multiply the length by the width and then by the mulch depth. For circular beds, the calculator determines the area from the diameter before applying the depth.
Cubic yards versus bags of mulch
Bulk mulch is commonly ordered by the cubic yard, while packaged mulch is usually labeled in cubic feet. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.
The bag estimate uses the cubic-foot size you select. Because bags must normally be purchased as whole units, the calculator rounds the estimate up to the next full bag.
Why include extra mulch?
Landscape beds are rarely perfectly level or uniform. A small extra allowance can account for uneven ground, measuring differences, settling, and material that is lost while spreading.

Mulch Calculator for Garden Beds
Garden beds often have different shapes and dimensions. If a bed is roughly rectangular, measure its length and width and enter those values directly.
For irregular landscaping areas, divide the space into smaller rectangles or circles, calculate each section separately, and add the results together. This is usually more accurate than trying to estimate one large irregular shape.

If a calculator result shows that your project requires 3 cubic yards of mulch, that is a measurement of volume rather than weight. Mulch weight can vary considerably depending on the material and moisture content.
How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need?
Bagged mulch is commonly sold by cubic-foot volume. The exact bag size varies by product, so the calculator lets you select a bag size of 1, 1.5, 2, or 3 cubic feet.
Total Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size = Number of Bags
Because you normally cannot purchase a fraction of a bag, the calculator rounds the result up to the next whole bag.
Always check the volume printed on the specific mulch bag you plan to buy. Two bags that look similar in size may contain different amounts of material.
Bulk Mulch Versus Bagged Mulch
Small landscaping projects may be convenient to complete with bagged mulch, while larger projects may be easier to supply with bulk mulch delivered by the cubic yard.
The calculator shows both cubic yards and an estimated bag count so you can compare the two purchasing methods.
The best option depends on the amount required, local delivery costs, available storage space, and the price of the particular mulch product.
How Mulch Depth Affects the Estimate
Mulch depth has a direct effect on the amount of material required. If the area remains the same, doubling the mulch depth approximately doubles the volume of mulch needed.
Use the depth appropriate for your landscaping plan or the instructions for the material you are using. Different landscaping applications may call for different mulch depths.
Mulch Around Trees and Shrubs
For a simple circular area around a tree or shrub, use the circular option and enter the diameter of the mulched area.
If you are calculating several identical planting areas, use the quantity field instead of calculating each one separately.
For more complicated planting beds containing multiple trees, shrubs, or other features, divide the landscape into manageable shapes and calculate each area separately.
Why Add Extra Mulch?
Real landscaping areas are rarely perfectly flat or perfectly measured. Mulch can also settle after installation, and some material may be lost during transportation and spreading.
The calculator includes a 10% extra-material allowance by default. You can change this percentage depending on how accurately the area is measured and how much contingency you want when purchasing mulch.
The exact geometric volume and the estimated purchase quantity are kept separate so you can see how much material the measured area requires before the extra allowance is added.
Common Types of Mulch
Landscaping mulch can include shredded wood, bark, wood chips, pine bark, cedar mulch, rubber mulch, composted materials, and other products.
Different mulch products can vary in texture, particle size, settling, moisture content, and how they are packaged. The calculator estimates the volume required but does not determine which mulch product is best for a particular landscaping application.
Tips for a Better Mulch Estimate
Measure larger beds in several places, especially when the width changes across the landscape. Breaking an irregular bed into smaller sections can produce a more reliable estimate.
Use the actual bag volume shown on the product packaging when estimating bagged mulch. For bulk orders, confirm how the local supplier measures and sells mulch before ordering.
If different areas will receive different mulch depths, calculate those areas separately rather than averaging all of them into one measurement.
